Having had a major stroke, her cognitive abilities have been seriously impaired. That means that she doesn't realize how important it is to focus and strive for improvement. Any input from us in this direction results in tearful and emotional accusations of harassment and bullying. But if she can't/won't make the effort then she can kiss goodbye to any chance of returning home.

If you are not in a place where you can "make your own life", what then? There will be plenty of people who will be unable to "turn their lives around" to order, just because some one or some system requires it of them.

People will need time and energy and support to assist them in having a reasonably acceptable "life made for them": not an easy task for everyday folk living everyday lives.

KirstenMhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04460530603998948689noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1806908830146896080.post-24137404455058894462012-04-13T22:40:58.642+01:002012-04-13T22:40:58.642+01:00Strongly agree with most of that. Evangelicals suffer from this sort of activism, and will-power disguised as discipleship.

I'd like to think that 'responsiveness' might contribute to an alternative narrative - I do have some choice about how I respond to my circumstances. Tho sometimes I think that is exaggerated too.

I think there is big political/social thinking to be done about community - belonging together, loving our neighbour, etc.

The tricky thing is that Jesus didn't heal everyone, did he? So it isn't only about healing/removal of crisis. It is going on being human in the shit that goes on going on. Or it is simply utopianism?@drgeorgemorleyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08299679460393761149noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1806908830146896080.post-25429998788415401112012-04-12T09:14:43.294+01:002012-04-12T09:14:43.294+01:00my understanding is that people's health and e...my understanding is that people's health and even intelligence can be influenced heavily by the environment that their mother lived in and how well she ate while she was pregnant. People's health continues to be affected by pollution in the environment. So "you make your own life" is very far from the truth.Bob Irvinghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06637476707951876595noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1806908830146896080.post-52462494142494750872012-02-24T18:30:14.865+00:002012-02-24T18:30:14.865+00:00I just stumbled on your blog, but I am very much i...I just stumbled on your blog, but I am very much in accord with your thinking. It is in religion, no matter how it might struggle in a particular denomination, that we find a compassionate response to the needy. Anything less for Christians not only denies the thrust of Jesus' words and life, it makes us less than human. Thanks for taking the time to write so clearly about a very big issue around the world.Br. For those who have and who can, this may feel true, but we are not all blessed with the ability to "make our own life". Whihc is why Jesus and his good news is actually such god news, and why the very first people he went and told about it were the ill and the disabled - those who could not "make their own life". Well said.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
